Walt Disney – A magical life is the attraction I didn’t know I needed in 2025

When I entered the opera of the main street of Disneyland Park, I knew I was for a special treat. After all, I got a special overview of the brand new attraction entering the emblematic building, Walt Disney – a magical life. This new show presents the first audio-animatronic figure of Walt Disney and tells the story of her life, her childhood growing up in Marceline, Missouri, the construction of Disneyland and the creation of her “Florida project”, which would finally become Walt Disney World.

What I did not know when I entered the opera, it is how much I would learn about Walt’s life, the inheritance and the dreams he has left for the next generations to wear in a big big beautiful tomorrow.

By entering the opera of the main street, there is a beautiful portrait of Walt Disney which was walking in the arches of the Sleeping Beauty Château. This is one of my favorite photos of Walt, and it’s almost a tag to go further in the gallery to explore before seeing the show.

The main gallery includes two main spaces. The first is more an art exhibition, with prints and photos of conceptual art and rendering of artists of the original Disneyland lands. I loved looking at them and thinking about what it should be to build a theme park from zero with Walt Disney and his team of Imagineers.

There is also a small showcase of mickey ear hats and passed decades. As a person who puts Mickey’s ears on each trip to a Disney theme park, there is something special to see how this simple helmet has evolved with Times, which is now transformed into fashion parts that can correspond to any Disney outfit or a park with ease.

Further in the gallery is a unique window which gives customers an overview of a recreation of Walt Disney’s apartment above the fire station on rue Main. I had the chance to visit the apartment during a guided tour, but it was a real treat to see this recreation.

Behind the window, you will see two small red sofas representative of the sofas in the main street apartment, which Walt and his wife, Lillian Disney, would use and convert into beds that they spent the night in the park. There are also two fully restored chairs, one with silk and one with velvet. These are real chairs that Walt and Lillian used in the apartment. I also love the small magenta lamp on the central table. It is a question of reminding the guests, just like the lamp in the window above the fire service, that Walt’s spirit continues to live in his park.

The evolution of audio-animatronics

The second “room” of the gallery includes a large showcase of awards and distinctions that Walt Disney has won over the years. My favorite is a statue representing Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which were once displayed inside the Walt office in Burbank, California.

The center of the second piece has a display of the evolution of audio-animatronic figures. The front of the screen, which faces the first room, has figures from the enchanted Tiki room of Walt Disney, which, at the time its opening, was a modern wonder. (This is always one of my favorite attractions in Disneyland because it is filled with so much history and nostalgia, and it is an ideal place to get rid of your feet and enjoy a dole whip.)

Around the rear of the audio-animatronic display is a more advanced animatronic, at least for the time they were built. There is a work doll of “it’s a small world” and some ignoble pirates of the pirates of the attraction of the Caribbean.

When the doors of the theater opened, the refresh space was warm and welcoming, the perfect tone for the story of Walt Disney. What I like most about the new Walt Disney – a magic life show is that the Walt Disney Imagineering team created audio for Walt from clips of him speaking in archive video and audio recordings. All these clips have been reconstructed, so the narration during this part of the show is entirely Walt’s own words, and not made with AI or an actor of the human voice who claims to be Walt.

The details mixed with the whole and the audio-animatronic figure are narcotic. During a panel of questions and answers with Walt Disney Imagineering and the Walt Disney Family Museum, it was revealed that even the audio-animatronic hands were Walt’s hands. This was done in partnership with the Walt Disney Family Museum, who has a bronze distribution of Walt’s hands in his collection. When the cast was made, Walt wore the two rings he still wore. Imagineering used bronze molding to create the mold for the audio-animatronic figure, and the figure has the two Walt rings on the two fingers of the ring.

Another thing to examine during the “office visit” game is the large poster card and adjacent shelves to the left of the scene. There is also a Disneyland card with pins and strings pointing to what goes next to the park.

The part of the show where guests can “visit” Walt’s office is much shorter than what I expected, just three minutes, but these few moments were the culmination of my recent trip to Disneyland.

How to see Walt Disney – A Magic Life

The new show of the Opera on rue Main made its officially debut on July 17, 2025, which coincides with the official date of the 70th anniversary of Disneyland. To see the show during its initial race, you will need a virtual queue, which is free and can be secured on the Disneyland application. Virtual queues take place at 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and you must have an eligible park ticket. If you are going to try the morning drop, you will need a reservation of Disneyland Park. Walt Disney – A magical life brings new life to the main street opera and will continue to delight guests for years. The galleries have parts that most Disney fans have probably not seen before, and the audio-animatronic display is a fun glimpse of the world of Imagineering.

The spectacle itself is a delight, although I want the part with the audio-animatronic figure of Walt is longer. Another thing I noticed was how, at times, Walt’s figure looked and moved like him, but other times my brain reminded me that I was looking at a robot. The suspension of disbelief, even for a few seconds, really gave life to this show.

I really felt that Walt was just talking to me. The second time I watched the show, I went to the middle of the theater towards a seat on the edge.
