5 Best Senior Adventures for Active Travelers Age 50 and Over (2026)

The Internet offers a bewildering array of travel ideas for older travelers and tours for seniors. Many of us have the time and resources to travel seriously, and we are aware of the health benefits of physical activity. But we’re also a diverse group, so not every senior adventure that appears online or in brochures will be relevant to all of us. On the one hand, the age range of older people (50 and over) is wider than that of any other group. We bring a variety of life experiences and physical abilities to the table.

A friend my age (70+) spent her summer vacation doing her “usual activities” like biking, canoeing, and hiking. I prefer to take long walks to get to know a destination. Other seniors use their vacation time to visit luxury ranches or resorts or simply take advantage of AARP travel discounts at nice hotels.

Best Senior Adventures for Active Travelers Over 50

Some active seniors may not want to go at full speed every day of a trip. Some may have health or mobility issues, or travel with someone who does. We may want to travel with people with very different interests and physical abilities – a skippered holiday with our grandchildren, for example. And while some older adults have very specific to-do lists, many just want to go somewhere, do something, and stay healthy. With all of that in mind, here are five different types of trips for active seniors that accommodate a variety of travel styles and interests.

1. National Parks and State Parks

In recent years, many older travelers have opted to “move close to home,” choosing senior adventures that offer active activities but don’t require long plane trips. The 63 national parks in the United States are great travel destinations for seniors who want to enjoy biking, bird watching, water sports, rock climbing, diving, fishing, hiking and wilderness backpacking, horseback riding, water sports, and winter sports. Breathtaking scenery can also be found in Canadian national parks.

State parks are generally less crowded and can be just as rewarding for senior adventures. Several national parks could fit into New York’s six million acres of Adirondack State Park. Beautiful Letchworth State Park in New York and Franconia Notch State Park in New Hampshire attract visitors from around the world. Hikers, bikers, and equestrians can enjoy the hoodoo rock formations at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas and the seasonal wildflowers at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.

2. Hiking, walking and cycling trips for active seniors

Many senior travel companies offer walking and biking adventures that allow active senior travelers to combine outdoor and urban experiences. European tours are particularly well designed to take walkers and cyclists to beautiful cities and countryside in a single trip. Two companies I recommend are Country Walkers and VBT Bicycling Vacations, which offer U.S. and international tours with guided and self-guided options. They also provide all the support you will need during your trip.

TRAVEL TOGETHER: For a multi-generational vacation, consider one of these family-friendly resorts designed to bring all ages together.

Most senior travel companies specify the activity level of a trip, and many will tell you approximately how many miles you will walk or bike each day. Backroads, an active travel specialist, also classifies its tours according to the type of traveler; Although it does not list a “50 and over” group, active seniors who enjoy traveling with family or various age groups may be listed under “family” or “20 and over.” And a division of Backroads called Dolce Tempo offers several levels of “casual” adventures perfect for seniors.

Tours marketed specifically as senior adventures are no less exciting than others. ElderTreks includes destinations as varied as Mongolia, Oman and Madagascar in its offering. Its five levels of activities are aimed at seniors. Senior Cycling focuses on the United States and Canada. And Road Scholar has an impressive list of hiking and walking tours as well as a few bike tours that include kayak and barge tours.

3. River cruises for seniors

In the United States and abroad, river cruises combine the opportunity to see different places with the ability to easily disembark at ports that offer options for walking, biking, and other sightseeing. Travelers are assigned cabins for the duration of the trip and can choose not to disembark at a given stop. This makes river travel ideal for active seniors with one or more less active travel partners.

In Europe, many companies’ riverboats sail on the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Seine and Volga. Walking tours and simple rides are available at almost every stop, and many companies now provide free bicycles for independent tours. Some offer guided excursions to ports where cycling is particularly suitable.

  • Viking offers a bike tour of the Kinderdijk Windmills as part of an Amsterdam-Antwerp trip.
  • Avalon Waterways’ Active & Discovery river cruises sail European rivers and include activities like e-biking through vineyards or pedaling through picturesque villages.
  • Uniworld offers a trip from Budapest to Passau where cyclists can ride several sections one way.
  • AmaWaterways offers a wellness program on each of its ships and offers bike tours of many ports, as well as hiking options.

4. Extended stays

Like river cruises, extended stays in the same destination allow seniors with different activity levels to enjoy a vacation together. Resorts allow some guests to stay on the beach or poolside while others take the bus into town or arrange tours and other activities. Seniors who enjoy all aspects of planning can use vacation rental booking sites like Vrbo or Airbnb to investigate and plan their own outings.

Educational travel company Smithsonian Journeys takes a different approach with its cultural trips. Weeklong visits to places like Florence and Normandy come with itineraries that allow seniors to be as active as they want in exploring the neighborhood and region. Three-week “Living in” stays in destinations like Andalusia, Lisbon and Provence place travelers in apart-hotels and offer trails based on their interests that include cooking, language teaching and hiking.

5. Generation-free vacation

Generationless travel is an emerging trend in which grandparents and grandchildren vacation together while skipping the generation in between. Children help older adults stay active, although it can be difficult to find activities that both generations can happily share.

A pioneer in the field, Road Scholar offers all kinds of multi-generational and skip-gen “learning adventures” around the world. Tauck offers “kid-tested touring adventures” like ziplining in Costa Rica and jet boating in Alaska with its “Tauck Bridges” family tours. Small-group tour company Intrepid Travel designates some tours just for families. Like Backroads, Intrepid offers many active travel choices but doesn’t cater specifically to seniors; some trips may require particularly fit grandparents.
