In Disney Parks, technology will be at the forefront in 2026
Disney theme parks have made great strides in technological innovations in their early years, and 2026 will be no exception. In the last episode of “We call it imagination” the YouTube video series hosted by Imagination of Walt Disneywe are taken behind the scenes of Search Disney. There we get a behind-the-scenes look at some of the park’s latest technology as well as a a sneak peek at the new magic coming to the parks very soon.

Your 2026 Disney vacation will be different from previous years for many reasonsparticularly due to certain incredible technology being at the forefront. From Walt Disney World to Disneyland Paris and beyond, here are some of the Major changes involving technology will take place next year, you’ll want to know if you’re planning a trip to the parks.
Free roaming Olaf Audio-Animatronic arrives in World of Frozen
The next generation of Audio-Animatronics with free roaming capabilities, an innovation that dates back as far as Lucky the dinosaur from the early years of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney California Adventure, is on its way to Disney’s theme parks in 2026.

In the latest episode of “We Call It Imagineering,” we learned that Olaf, everyone’s favorite snowman who loves warm hugs, is the newest free-roaming Audio Animatronic figure to make his debut in front of guests.

Olaf will start doing appearances in World of Frozen early next year to both Hong Kong Disneyland (during special limited-time appearances) as well as Disneyland Paris. It was recently announced that World of Frozen would open in Paris on March 29, 2026. The exact date of Olaf’s debut in Hong Kong has not been announced.

Olaf is the highlight of the walking audio-animatronics that preceded the one guests saw throughout the parks, including the BD-X Droids seen in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge as well as HERBIE Since Fantastic Four who appeared in Tomorrowland at Disneyland Resort earlier this year. These Audio-Animatronics use a concept called reinforcement learning to draw more information from the world around them and become more proficient in skills such as balance, reactions, etc.

Walt Disney Imagineering continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with Audio-Animatronics through its partnership with companies and institutions such as Nvidia And ETH Zurich.

New storyline debuting on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
Olaf isn’t the only new technology that will deepen the guest experience at theme parks starting in 2026. A new scenario inspired by the next film The Mandalorian and Grogu is coming to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Walt Disney World and Disneyland in May 2026, and it’s all thanks to the technology behind the ride.

Each cockpit in Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run is driven by graphics cardswith the media seen by guests is rendered in real time. This gives Imagineering flexibility with future upgradeslike the ability to introduce new stories and places. It also gave Imagineering the opportunity to revisit the roles taken on by the guests during the ride – pilot, gunner and engineer – and introduce different responsibilities into the new story.
The new Smugglers Run storyline will also use existing resources from the world of cinema.bringing the location images and videos used for filming The Mandalorian and Grogu during the journey. These advances, powered by Unreal Engine 5all of this is possible thanks to Disney’s partnerships with Epic Games And Nvidia.

New vehicles, blasters and more coming to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
Technology paves the way for ride updates at Walt Disney World in 2026. Topping this list is Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which closed its doors last summer for a complete renovation with new ride vehicles, blasters, and more. A new scoring system will also be introduced, giving racers the opportunity to compete for a seemingly unlimited high score!

Other ride updates coming in 2026 include a Big Thunder Mountain Railway with a new storyline and show stage featuring glow-in-the-dark pools and iridescent stalagmites and stalactites.

Also coming in summer 2026 is a new version of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster with Electric Mayhem. That’s right, the Muppets are bringing back this classic roller coaster, with a new pre-show featuring the very first Audio-Animatronic Scooter. I think we can also see some audio-animatronic penguins in this concept art!

These attraction enhancements bring technology to the forefront in new and exciting ways, and I can’t wait to experience these changes myself when they debut in 2026.

Disney theme park technology beyond 2026
In addition to the changes coming in 2026, Disney Imagineering gave a rare glimpse at some of the still-developing technologies that could be implemented in theme parks in the years to come. One of these innovations is frontal projectionwhich allows micro-expressions and close-up details like skin texture to be refined by calibration. Disney uses its own internal software (the same as that used on Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run) to make front projection possible.

When might we see frontal projection used on characters and in the parks? Disney said that the technology behind frontal projections could help bring characters like Mike Wasowski, Lightning McQueen and Hades to life. It is interesting that these three specific characters are mentioned, as they all have lands in the works at Walt Disney World: Monstropolis in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Piston Peak National Park, and the upcoming villain-themed Unnamed Lands in Magic Kingdom. So to answer the question, it might not be long before we see frontal projection used on the characters!

Another technology in the works is a concept known as “extended reality”. Using Ray-Ben’s Meat glassesImagineers are exploring the possibility of wearable technology that can provide deeper experiences in parks. The example used was ask Meta glasses to provide more information about a business locationlike a shop in the bazaar in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

By developing extended reality, Imagineers strive to create a theme park experience where the guest relies less on their phone and can stay in the moment with friends and family.

Whether it’s front projection, extended reality or the latest generation of audio-animatronics, it’s no secret that Disney Imagineering is leading the way in emerging technologies to further enhance the theme park guest experience. As Bruce Vaughn, president and chief creative officer of Walt Disney Imagineering, describes it: The Research and Development wing of Walt Disney Imagineering is “the wizard’s shop within a wizard’s shop.”

After getting a glimpse of the technology behind the magic, it’s clear that there is so much to look forward to as we plan our trips to Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort or any of the international theme parks (and let’s not forget Disney Cruise Line!). These innovations could intensify as Imagineering employs JARVIS, the in-house software integrated with decades of Imagineering research, learning, documentation and collective knowledge. As Disney says, this will “allow us to bring experiences to life faster than ever.”
Be sure to watch these technologies come to fruition in the years to come!
