Meet Characters on Disney Cruise Line Can Literally “Make” Your Child’s Vacation: Here are 5 Ways to Make the Most of Your Experience
Imagine your child meeting their favorite Disney movie or TV character. I can just see the cheek-to-cheek smile on my son’s face if he ever met Woody or Buzz from “Toy Story.” The meeting might be followed by a few tears of shock, but that moment of seeing them “come to life” would certainly be an essential memory.
Any parent who has visited a Disney theme park knows the stress of finding scheduled character appearances and planning your days around them. On the other hand, it’s easy for kids to meet characters on Disney Cruise Line thanks to the different appearances that take place throughout each sailing. There are even themed cruises and special experiences for super fans.
In addition to meeting characters from Disney movies and TV shows (a la Doc McStuffins), you’ll get to rub shoulders with icons from Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars, all of which also fall under the company. Below are five ways to “guarantee” you’ll see your child’s favorite character and make their dreams come true.
DON’T MISS A BEAT: The “secrets” of the Disney cruise
1. Pre-book your favorite characters, if possible.

Some character experiences are available for families, before boarding. Once your cruise has been paid for and the booking window has opened, log in to your account and view the list of available activities. Note: Character appearances and activities vary by ship, but examples include the Royal Gathering, where Disney’s royal characters all gather in one place, and Olaf’s Royal Picnic, featuring favorites from the “Frozen” movie. While some are free, others may incur additional charges.
2. Check the character list for your navigation as soon as you board the ship.
Standard character appearances are listed in the Navigator’s daily schedule (also accessible via the app) on the first day. Seeing all available encounters each day makes it easier for you to plan around them. You’ll usually see plenty of opportunities to meet Mickey Mouse and his crew, so pay close attention to the “rarer” characters (think Pixar) and those who only meet once or twice during each cruise. We recommend arriving approximately 10 minutes before the designated time.
3. Look for opportunities to meet characters beyond scheduled appearances.
The characters often visit the little ones in the ships’ youth clubs, the Oceaneer Club and the Oceaneer Lab. You can also see them making the rounds of restaurants at meal times; take part in must-see experiences such as embarkation, fireworks and disembarkation shows; and hanging out on the cruise line’s private islands. Although these don’t include professional photos and autographs like scheduled appearances do, they still serve as serendipitous magic.

4. Consider specific ships for “rarer” characters.

You’ll have to put in a little more effort to meet some characters, especially those from more recent films like Moana from “Moana” and Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” as well as characters from Pixar. Compare Disney ships to see which ones feature your favorites. For example, Moana is the star of Disney Treasure, whose main production show is “Disney the Tale of Moana”. She’s also on Disney Wish, where fans can book movie-themed cabins.
Tiana, on the other hand, is known to frequent several ships. But your chances of seeing it will be better on Disney Wonder, since there are a handful of amenities inspired by the film.
For fans of Pixar films, Disney Wonder is also hosting a Pixar Pals Party, where you can meet characters such as Woody and Jessie from “Toy Story,” Mr. and Mrs. Incredibles from “The Incredibles,” Remy and Emile from “Ratatouille.” “, Boo and Sully from “Monsters, Inc.”, Joy from “Inside Out” and Russell and Dug from “Up”.
5. Book a themed cruise for the full character experience.
Select itineraries in January, February and March are designated for Disney Special Days at Sea, increasing your chances of character encounters on Disney Cruise Line. Perhaps the most popular is Marvel Day at Sea, where little superheroes can stand next to characters like Spider-Man, Captain Marvel, Captain America, Mighty Thor, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, Thor, Loki and Black Widow. The activities and entertainment are centered around the theme for a fun and immersive experience. Note: Special Days at Sea themes are subject to change each year.
