Walt Disney World at sea: 5 reasons why the Disney Destiny is the ultimate cruise ship for theme park fans
Disney Cruise Line’s seventh ship, the Disney Destiny, has officially launched. Like all Disney Cruise Line ships, the Destiny features rotational dining, Pirate Night, and activities for passengers of all ages. But there are a few key differences that set the Destiny apart from the rest of the fleet.

The Disney Destiny’s heroes and villains theme is the most striking difference, bringing a narrative through line to the voyage and offering guests the chance to have extended time with the characters while on board. Go one layer deeper, however, and you’ll see a growing trend that Disney Cruise Line began with its Wish-class ships: incorporating more stories from the Disney theme parks onboard.
As someone who has visited the Disney theme parks hundreds of times (you can thank my several-year Southern California residency for the lion’s share of those numbers), Disney Cruise Line was something that came to me later in life. You see, as a theme park fan-turned-editor, Disney World and Disneyland are my bread and butter, my raison d’être, mine own self.

These days, however, I consider Port Canaveral just as viable as a Disney vacation destination as Orlando, Florida; Castaway Cay just as tempting as Anaheim, California. It didn’t take long for me to understand the appeal of Disney Cruise Line, but the Disney Destiny solidified why I see Disney Cruise Line as an extension of the theme parks: the strength in its storytelling. If you’ve never been on a Disney cruise but you love the parks as much as I do, there are plenty of reasons why you should consider booking the Disney Destiny specifically for your next vacation.
Immersive dining experiences inspired by Disney theme park stories
The strongest crossover between the Disney theme parks and the Disney Destiny lies in its food and beverage offerings. Several uniquely themed restaurants, bars, and lounges draw inspiration from classic theme park rides, and in some cases, you feel as if you have been transported off the ship and into Magic Kingdom or Disneyland Park.
Haunted Mansion Parlor
The most obvious example of this is the Haunted Mansion Parlor. The adult-exclusive lounge is essentially a clone of what you’ll find on Disney Cruise Line’s sixth ship, the Disney Treasure. From the moment I stepped foot in Haunted Mansion Parlor, I could have sworn Disney had allowed me to step out of my Doom Buggy (the ride vehicle found in the classic attraction) and explore the world of Master Gracey’s cryptic abode.

This time, as the story goes, we are in a Captain’s parlor on an esteemed steamship, fitted with luxurious furniture and ornate finishes that give the feeling of eerie opulence. Nautical touches pay homage to the early concepts of Haunted Mansion, including the Ghost Fish. This centerpiece of the parlor is the manifestation of renderings by Rolly Crump, an Imagineer responsible for much of the original Haunted Mansion attraction we know and love today.

Every detail was thought through, from the ride’s iconic wallpaper to the moving portraits keeping a watchful eye on patrons. Keep your ears open and you’ll recognize many moments from the ride like Madame Leota’s incantation as well as “Grim Grinning Ghosts.” While the space is more or less the same as you’ll find on the Disney Treasure, the menu was completely redone to offer guests aboard the Disney Destiny something unique.
And, as always: beware of hitchhiking ghosts.
Cask and Cannon
If you’re looking for a space on the Destiny that’s a few degrees of separation further from the source material than Haunted Mansion Parlor, you’ll want to carve time out of your voyage for Cask and Cannon.
This lounge is inspired by the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and is filled with Easter eggs. Rather than feeling like you are stepping into the world of Pirates of the Caribbean, Cask and Cannon is squarely rooted in the real world, with enough wide-screen televisions to watch whatever sporting event happens to be taking place while on the ship. On the first night of our preview voyage, Monday Night Football was on every TV to remind us that we are not, in fact, aboard a pirate ship.

That doesn’t mean this space phones in the details. On the contrary, Cask and Cannon has floor-to-ceiling references to Pirates of the Caribbean (literally – the detail in the carpet and on the ceiling is incredible). Tap handles are carved to resemble beloved characters and details from the ride, like the Barker Bird and the prison keys held by the four-legged watchdog at the end of the attraction.

If you’re looking for more spaces inspired by Disney attractions on the Disney Cruise Line Fleet, Cask and Cannon’s sister lounge on the Disney Treasure is called Periscope Pub, modeled mainly after the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea attraction and film. The Disney Treasure is also home to Skipper Society Lounge, which pays homage to The Jungle Cruise.

Attractions at sea
The hallmark of any Disney theme park is a great ride. Like Spaceship Earth in EPCOT or Tower of Terror in Hollywood Studios, Disney Cruise Line has become known among theme park fans for its own hallmark attraction: a water coaster found on all but two of its existing ships.
Disney Cruise Line’s Wish-class ships brought the next generation of water coasters to Disney Cruise Line: AquaMouse, available on the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure, and now the Disney Destiny. AquaMouse comes with everything you’d expect from a Disney attraction: a story, characters, just enough thrill that all ages can enjoy, and yes, even a line to stand in before you ride.

AquaMouse on the Disney Destiny has a brand new story unique to the ship called “Sing A Silly Song.” It embraces the ship’s heroes-and-villains theme, with cameos appearing during the ride’s lift. Be on the lookout for familiar faces like the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Scar from The Lion King, and even the dancing skeletons from The Skeleton Dance.

Having attractions on cruise ships is a trend Disney intends to continue with its fleet. Coming up in 2026 is the Disney Adventure, the first Disney Cruise Line ship to be homeported in Asia. One of the Adventure’s defining features will be Marvel Landing, an outdoor adventure zone complete with not one, not two, but three rides: Groot Galaxy Spin, Pym Quantum Racers, and Ironcycle Test Run, the first-ever roller coaster aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest roller coaster at sea.

Nods to Disney attractions can be found elsewhere on the Disney Destiny. I previously spoke about Haunted Mansion Parlor as well as Cask and Cannon. Other nods to Disney Parks and attractions can be found on other Wish-class ships, including the Tomorrow Tower Suite on the Disney Treasure, inspired by EPCOT.
Next-level character interactions
If your favorite activity in the Disney theme parks is meeting your favorite characters, then you’ll feel right at home on a Disney Cruise Line ship. The Fab Five (that’s Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald) appear frequently throughout the voyage, both in stage shows like the Sail Away Celebration as well as traditional meet-and-greets.
They’ll even don special outfits on themed nights like Pirate Night. Minnie Mouse, in particular, has quite an extensive wardrobe, including an exclusive superhero outfit on Disney Destiny.

Unique to the Disney Destiny are “meet and play” experiences that take the traditional character meet-and-greet and turn it up to 11. While you can always hop in line to snap a photo with Mickey Mouse or Goofy, the Disney Destiny is also home to interactive events where you spend extended time with a hero or, in many cases, a villain.

For example, in “Treble Making With Cruella,” a hybrid show and character encounter at De Vil’s Piano Lounge, you’re tasked with coming up with a new theme song for Cruella de Vil while Cruella herself keeps watchful eye (and commentary). Cruella de Vil appears multiple times throughout the voyage in these meet-and-play interactions, including a fashion show.

“Dr. Facilier’s Parlor” is an intimate, limited-capacity experience where Dr. Facilier performs some close-up card trickery. There are also shows in the Grand Hall that culminate in the chance to greet Loki or T’Challa, the Black Panther.

These experiences can be trickier to implement in the theme parks, making the Disney Destiny the perfect playground for characters to have a more drawn-out experience with guests. Be sure to download and check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for the start times for these and many other character encounters.

The best of Disney live entertainment
Disney is no stranger to delivering top-tier live entertainment in its parks, from parades to stage shows to nighttime fireworks spectaculars. Disney Destiny runs that gamut and then some, with stage shows like Disney Hercules bringing down the house in a fresh spin on the 1997 animated film. All of the film’s beloved songs are present and accounted for, along with a new song cut from the movie.

Live entertainment comes in all shapes and sizes aboard the Destiny. Pride Lands: Feast of the Lion King is not to be missed, thanks to its excellent menu and stellar vocalists who perform songs from the 1994 animated film (along with its sequel and Broadway musical) during dinner. Live music is plentiful on the Destiny or any Disney Cruise Line ship, with bands and musicians filling the halls with Disney tunes each evening.

A day at a Disney theme park is not complete without fireworks, and Disney Cruise Line is no different. In fact, Disney Cruise Line is the only cruise line that offers live fireworks, and you can catch them on Pirate Night during your Disney Destiny sailing.
Magical Disney touches
Even after you strip away the fireworks, the immersive lounges, and even the water coaster, what you’re left with is what truly makes Disney Cruise Line reminiscent of the theme parks. While aboard the Disney Destiny, I was reminded yet again of Disney’s most enduring quality across its Experiences division: its commitment to exceptional service and to adding simple yet oh-so-magical touches throughout your vacation.

Magic is around every corner of the Disney Destiny, whether it’s running into a Cast Member you met on a previous Disney Cruise Line ship or hearing your favorite Disney song performed by one of the live bands at a lounge. It’s ordering room service and enjoying a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar in your stateroom or racing to Marceline Market for breakfast the morning they serve Churro Mickey Waffles. These magical moments will feel very familiar to those who frequent the Disney theme parks.

The Disney Destiny’s lasting legacy will be the huge step forward it took in infusing strong storytelling elements throughout the voyage. With the Disney theme parks rich in stories to tell, it’s no wonder more of them are finding their way to the seven seas, or in this instance, the seven existing Disney Cruise Line ships. It’s a trend I hope Disney continues in the years to come, and with six more ships ordered as of this writing, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that.

Disclosure: I was invited by Disney Cruise Line to attend a hosted media preview sailing of the Disney Destiny. When I attend events as invited media, I am not required to review that event on my channels, nor am I required to review that event favorably. My goal, as with all of my coverage, is to provide an unbiased and honest recap of any event I attend. This includes coverage where I pay full price for my own travel as well as hosted events.
